My girlfriend and I recently adopted a 3 month old male Siberian Husky. A few days ago, the Husky started to growl at my girlfriend when she picked him up, or when she told him not to do something (by closing his snout and telling him "no").

Now he will growl and then bite her if she holds him too long, and it’s starting to be a major problem.

The dog does not do this to me, and we think it is because he sees me as the Alpha of the pack, and my girlfriend is not seen as important enough to reprimand him.

We have bought bite deterrent spray, the bitter apple kind, and it has reduced the problem to mostly growling.

I wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions to how my girlfriend and I can show co-dominance so that he will listen to both of us and not give either of us problems when we want to handle him or when he needs to be told "no".

If anyone has any experience with the "Ignore" solution, please give me your thoughts, I would love to hear any personal anecdotes.

We have two dobermans and just moved into a new rental home, which we rented largely for the huge backyard for our dogs. Well now that we’re moving in we’ve discovered our neighbors have a small hound mix. You can imagine the problem this creates. The fence is a 6-foot wood privacy fence, but if both of us have our dogs out at the same time, they just race up and down that side of the yard, barking and harassing each other (I’m also worried about the grass!). I don’t want this to cause problems with the neighbors, so am considering getting one of those anti-bark boxes you mount on the fence that emits an ultrasonic noise when they bark, in the hopes that it will shut up their dog and ours. However, our dogs don’t have a problem with just incessant barking as the product seems to indicate, they are mainly obnoxious just when this other dog is out. Has anyone had experience with these things? If this won’t work, any other recommendations?

I just found out we have some house mice… At least, I think they are mice. They’re not very big. Maybe an inch and a half long..

We saw one in the basement of our house and now there’s one behind our microwave on the main kitchen counter.

So here’s some of my paranoid questions because we’ve never had a mouse problem before in the seven years we’ve been living in our house:

- Can mice/rats somehow climb up wooden stairs?

- I’m afraid that the mice/rats may get into my clothes. Would they go into my clothes and if they do, what’s a great deterrent? I’ve heard Irish Spring soap works good.

- Should I be afraid of these mice because of diseases they possibly carry? Or do they have fleas that I should be afraid of?

- What’s the best way to get rid of these mice without getting a cat or using poison because we have a small dog in the house? Should we call an exterminator?

- And lastly, do these sound like mice or rats? The one I saw behind the microwave was slightly gray in color and was maybe one to two inches long.

The neighbors dogs bark all the time and it is very annoying. What can be done about it? Animal control will not do anything nor will the police. Now what? These are big dogs too and very loud, and will bark late into the night.
We have tried takling to them and they do nothing.

I live in Detroit and as a deterrent I thought I’d clean my rifle in the back yard with my dog on the leash, people around here tend to leave those who are "visibly armed" alone. I’m curious if this would be illegal somehow. I would be on my property, and I would NOT be brandishing (aiming at stuff, or other peoples property), just cleaning it, sitting with my rifle near me. I’m almost certain this would be legal in Michigan, but what of Detroit specifically? Any special laws for the city? Thanks.

Another question: what of open carry laws here? A neighbor of mine moved a half-mile away and I don’t have a car and we’ve discussed walking with my rifle to his place to play with our guns Would it be legal to walk with a rifle through Detroit? I know Michigan has open carry, but I wonder if Detroit has provisions against it due to crime and paranoia. Thanks.

I am looking to get a puppy within the next 2-3 months and have chosen breeders with available puppies for both a lab and a shepherd. I am an adult, I live in a 2 bedroom condo. Although I do not have a yard, I run twice a day, live near an off leash dog park and only work 3 days a week as an RN. I have 2 cats in the house who are dog savvy. I like labs being so friendly. But on the other hand, as a woman – I’d really like the protection and deterrent that a shepherd would offer.
Ideas? Experiences?

Anytime she has some downtime, and is bored, instead of chewing on a toy she will chew on her nails on her back feet. She just goes crazy on them. It worries me because I’ve read about dogs with OCD and I’m afraid that’s what’s wrong with her. I tried to put some pickle juice on them (thinking the sour taste would be a deterrent) but it didn’t help. I don’t want to use pepper juice or anything because I don’t want to hurt her.. Any suggestions ?

They know that their dogs’ barking is extremely annoying,
but they let her do it anyway because it is easier than doing anything else about it. We used to love our neighbors, but that dog, ugh!
