How to keep dogs from barking insanely?

ultrasonic dog

HELP I’m going crazy!

My wife has adopted a few Pomeranians. Don’t get me wrong, I love these little critters….just like kids. However, their barking has been driving me absolutely insane lately. They have free run of a large back yard, a doggie door to come and go when they please, and are walked faithfully daily.

When I take them for walks, they are great! No noise, obedient, smart, etc. The problem is they are deafening when someone comes to the door, are outside by themselves, the wind blows, etc. I have tried ultrasonic barkers, remote controlled collars and the automatic shock collars. These all work to a degree, but with this breed being so small, the collars are not designed for them.

My wife has resorted to sleeping downstairs with the dogs in order to let me get a good nights sleep without a barking interruption.

I appreciate your comments in advance!

dog silencer

My neighbors little dogs are not going to drive me crazy this summer! They bark and scratch at the fence the whole time I am outside in the back yard. The Home Owner Association is going to send them a letter and they also suggested I contact my local Animal Control.

Has anyone used those electronic devices that send out a noise when dogs bark? Do they work? And what was it? They are not cheap, so I don’t want to keep buying ones to see if they work or not. What worked for you? I would like to buy one to put in my back yard aimed at my neighbor’s fence with the noisy dogs.

Thanks in advance!! I really am desperate here!
I did try to talk to them, but found out they don’t speak English. So I wrote them a letter last year, but nothing seemed to change. Same noise every day!! I’m about to pull my own hair out. Make BBQing not so fun. ):
No, talking to their dogs through the fence is no good. It just makes them rile-up more!

how do I get my dog to stop peeing on my deck?

dog deterrent

I have a 3 year old neutered shi-poo. We moved at the beginning of the year to a new home that has a wooden deck that we keep our grill on. We originally noticed the dog peeing on the leg of the grill because of the snow on the ground around it was yellow. I am not sure if he did this before at the old house because the grill was in the back yard and I didn’t pay attention to it.

I bought a spray deterrent that worked occasionally, but now instead of peeing on the grill leg he has taken to peeing on the outside of the sliding glass door. I have sprayed the deterrent there and on the wood. I have scolded him, held his nose close to it (not in it) and put him in his kennel.
If I stand watch he doesn’t do it, but as soon as no one is watching he does it again.

Please help we are at our wits end. He has also begun barking more and become more nippy since the move but seems to be adjusting more except for the peeing thing.

neighbors barking dog

I have a neighbor who just moved in next door about a week ago. They left there dog in a small confined area next to there house where he barks all day. He broke the gate down and started running through the neighborhood barking. I called the owner and finally his brother came to get the dog. Now the tenants ( the owners daughter) keep the dog in the back yard where it barks for about 11 hours at a time. What and how can I get this resolved without a knock down drag out with my new neighbors?

Detroit open carry laws?

dog deterrent

I live in Detroit and as a deterrent I thought I’d clean my rifle in the back yard with my dog on the leash, people around here tend to leave those who are "visibly armed" alone. I’m curious if this would be illegal somehow. I would be on my property, and I would NOT be brandishing (aiming at stuff, or other peoples property), just cleaning it, sitting with my rifle near me. I’m almost certain this would be legal in Michigan, but what of Detroit specifically? Any special laws for the city? Thanks.

Another question: what of open carry laws here? A neighbor of mine moved a half-mile away and I don’t have a car and we’ve discussed walking with my rifle to his place to play with our guns :D Would it be legal to walk with a rifle through Detroit? I know Michigan has open carry, but I wonder if Detroit has provisions against it due to crime and paranoia. Thanks.

neighbors barking dog

I love spending time in my back yard but it is ruined by my neighbors pit bull who barks the whole time. I really don’t like dogs anyway so this is extra annoying to me. What should I do? I really don’t know my neighbor so I’d prefer not to have to go talk to her about this just yet.

dog deterrent

I will be getting a dog in a few weeks and, while I have narrowed it down to a few breeds, I am simply stuck as to which one would really suit my family best. We want a large to giant breed (it’s a firm preference–I love bigger dogs), known for its stable and sweet disposition. I have three children (ages 6-12), own a home, and have no restrictions on breed by the HOA (other than number of dogs owned). Through years of research and some limited experience with big dogs, I recognize that certain breeds are out due to my personality and circumstance. I am divorced so I will be the pack leader; I do not want a naturally more dominant breed. I know some breeds (doberman, rottie, etc.) usually require a more confident, experienced leader than I am. While I am fully capable of being clear who the boss is (me), I’m not sure I will be honestly able to handle a particularly intelligent/strong-willed breed. Furthermore, it will be just me and the kids and I will not be able to give certain breeds the high level excercise they need (I don’t jog or hike). I am, however, fortunate enough to work out of my home so I will be home most of the day. I plan on daily walks and play sessions in the back yard (fenced so the dog will have free romping time back there). Dog parks for free running/playing are a given, at least a couple of times a week. We would like a dog that will be on the friendlier side with anything and everything. Some dogs are more aloof, less playful, some are more wary of anyone outside the family, some are just big "i love everyone" goofballs. We are leaning toward the goofball. I absolutely do want a protective dog but one that will perhaps let its size be the deterrent, rather than a scary growl :) I do not want a serious watchdog/guardog. I prefer a dog that will only get serious and physically protective if it’s absolutely and obviously needed. On the other hand, and please forgive my rambling, I do want a dog that will have a natural affinity towards children and one who would prefer to calmly "watch" over the kids (or join in the play!).
Now, I have searched and searched the shelters but where I live, almost every single dog I have come across (of the size I am looking for) is mixed with a breed that either is very energetic (i.e. lab x border collie) or one I know I am not experienced enough to properly train and be leader to (pit bull, ridgeback, chow chow, etc. with pit being in 90% of the dogs–great, loving dogs but require a more experienced owner, in my opinion). I don’t want to look into Goldens or Labs (much experience with them within family/friendship circles and, while they are really wonderful, they just arent the right dog for us).

I know ANY dog can be the perfect dog because it’s the humans who shape the dog, but genetics and breed do play a role. There are breeds who have it in their genes to hunt, herd, etc. This is why I am making my list and narrowing it down. I need to make sure I am not going to end up with a dog who needs more of a "job" than I can give it (ex: a border collie would HATE living with me).

I’m still open to adopting/rescue, and here are the breeds I LOVE and am looking at. Perhaps there is a trait about a certain dog on the list (such as being a bit willful, too aloof, etc.), and I just don’t know about it yet? If anybody has any experience/information that could help me narrow it down even further, I would greatly appreciate it.
Newfoundland
Saint Bernard
Bernese Mountain Dog
Great Dane
English Mastiff
Swiss Mountain Dog
Irish Wolfhound
Great Pyr

Now, my dream dog is a Newfoundland but I am not dead-set on that breed due to the fact that I live in Florida and don’t have a swimming pool ;)

Perhaps there is a breed I missed; maybe there’s a dog not on my list that would work well? I looked into Collie’s too, but just not sure yet. I welcome suggestions!
Thank You

Anyone know of a doorway sound barrier for pets?

dog deterrent

I was searching the web a while back and stumbled upon a device that you stick in the frame of the door and it emits a sound the dog doesn’t like so it keeps them from running out the front door. It was relatively cheap too… sadly I didn’t purchase it and now I really wish I had. My dog can run like no tomorrow and once he’s free he likes to stay that way (LOVES to run). I can’t remember what it’s called and every time I search for it I only come up with these ultrasonic devices you put in the door that activate a shock collar on the dog. I’m just looking for the simple sound deterrent that uses some frequency dogs don’t like… no collar or shocking involved. Does ANYONE know what I’m talking about?
Well there definitely is such a thing because I almost bought it… We’ve probably spent a couple grand on obedience classes already. He’s just that stubborn. The renowned instructor even said we have a difficult dog LOL Yes we’ve used the leash. Yes we’ve stood there and repeatedly gone over it with him. He’s just stubborn and I can’t exactly keep him on a chain in the house! He’s making me broke and exhausted from chasing him blocks at a time. Even when I don’t chase him he just goes off exploring anyway cause it’s fun. And no that’s not safe, he’s not smart about cars- has almost been hit on a few occasions. We do have a big fenced in back yard but that’s apparently not enough. We move regularly (military) so haven’t gone as far as electronic fences. I’d just like something to block the front door… darn dog… maybe I’ll just barricade the door and start using the window lol

Is this going to bother my neighbors?

ultrasonic dog repeller

I bought a Yard Guard ultrasonic pest repeller for the deer in my back yard. I know that a dog’s hearing range overlaps a deer’s but I am wondering if it will bother their dogs (they are inside/outside). It would be pointed in my neighbor’s direction, but it has to go about 15′ to my fence, about 10′ more and then they have a fence (both are 6′ wood fences with very small gaps). TIA
I haven’t put the darn thing up YET. I just wanted some opinions on whether the sound range, being interrupted by both fences and possibly a house, could still get to the dogs.

ultrasonic dog

Late last week, our neighbors did something to cause our dog to be afraid to go into the back yard. Normally, he prefers to be outside and would run all over the yard just because. Recently however, something has caused him to stop doing so. Some of his running would consist of running along the fence line with our neighbor’s daughter, but the other day she did something to our dog that caused him to yelp and run away from the fence. Since, he as been afraid to go withing 50 feet of the fence unless one of use it out with him. We took him to the vet who was unable to find anything physically wrong with him, there were no signs of pepper spray, and the girl and her mother deny doing anything to our dog. Is there a way to find if they are using an ultrasonic dog repellent?
