How to stop a destructive dog?

dog deterrent

We adopted a dog from the local shelter 3 months ago, and she’s great, except for one thing. She destroys EVERYTHING. We’ve had dogs our entire lives and we’ve never had one like this so we don’t know what to do. We got chew deterrent spray but it’s not doing anything. She has plenty of toys, including an interactive kong toy filled with treats, but she STILL destroys everything. Our tables and chairs are ruined, as well as three dog beds (hers and the two that belong to our other two dogs). One of my parents is, understandably, getting really really frustrated, while the other one just tries to hide it and pretend it’s not happening (not very responsible behaviour for a parent if you ask me). It remains though, that our house, and by extension, our family is getting destroyed by this dog’s destructive behaviour. She gets lots of attention and exercise too (though she could stand to get walked more often. I can’t do it as i’ve injured my ankle but my parent’s take her.)

What do we do? We’ve tried distractions and deterrents, but she waits until no one is in the room to destroy, so we have no chance of catching her and telling her off…My Dad wants to banish her to the garage forever because she isn’t improving (just getting worse), but even i know that that’s not the answer, she’ll just fester in her bad habits and it will get worse, but i also know that this is completely unacceptable behaviour that we can’t seem to fix, and his idea is starting to look like the only option. Given that we’ve tried everything we can think of, what else is there? I’ve suggested crating her when we can’t watch her, but my Mom (who is trying to hide all the destruction and lets it happen rather than addressing it) is completely against i, as she thinks it’s cruel. I think that while it won’t train her to stop destroying, it will at least prevent her from doing it, but she won’t hear of it.

What else can we do to stop this destructive behaviour, especially as she only does it when we’re not in the same room to watch her (ie: when we’re sleeping). We’ve tried everything we can think of, and it’s driving at least two of us crazy.

Biopsy for my dog, worth it?

dog deterrent

So I’ve discussed with a couple of vets and the most recent vet wants to do a biopsy.
This is what’s going on:

Since November my dog has been licking an area of her leg and will lick it raw. We keep a cone on her so she won’t. Whenever it fully heals we take the cone off but after a few days she starts up again.
The first vet we took her to said that it was habitual and we had to keep her better occupied. Since then I’ve been giving her lots of chews and she gets fed from a kong wobbler. I was already walking her every day. But the problem wasn’t going away. She also said to try benedryl (nothing) deterrents like bitter apple (I didn’t have any so tried lemon juice) and that pepper arthritis cream. Anything I put on would slow her down at first but she’d get used to it and actually made her want to lick more (she likes to clean herself).
So the second vet I discussed with said to try hydrocortisone cream. Again, anything we put on she just wants to lick off so it didn’t help. This vet also mentioned that boredom licking is usually lower down (her spot is above the elbow)
The third vet I asked again didn’t agree with the boredom licking. She’s not sure what it is but wants to do a biopsy. The estimate I got for this was 0 and I am very hesitant to pay for it because I feel like nothing will show up. BTW, there’s no lumps or anything. So, should I do it? I really don’t want to have her be a cone head the rest of her life but is it likely that something will come up on it?
I’m only 17 and only work 10-20 hours a week so spending that much is a bigger deal for me
My parents just paid for her tooth removal which was around 0 and they’re low on money until my dad gets his bonus in september so I can’t ask them.
She is 9 years old and we’ve had her for 6 years. She’s never lived outside since she’s been with us. When she was like 4 or 5 she did have a licking problem but I think it was lower down and she stopped after it healed.
All the consults have been free b/c the first was during her exam and included a follow-up, the second was with my teacher in my vet assistant program so that was free, and the third was during her dental follow-up so it was also free.

How do I keep squirrels out of my yard?

dog deterrent

There is a squirrel living in my wall (I’m working on getting him out) and I beleive this is the same animal that has been digging holes all over my yard (retrieving his food). My dogs aren’t helping, all they do is dig the squirrel holes even bigger and it’s completely tearing up my yard! I’m guessing once I get it out of my house it might help, but is there any other ideas of natural deterrents to keep them away for good? I can’t find much online… Thanks.
Wow, what completely useless responses. I’m looking for something along the holistic approach to keep them away, not kill them. TO EVOLVE: A squirrel or anything else living in your walls damages your home (elecrical, etc.) and exposes you to fleas, disease, etc. You sound like a poser Evolve… yards don’t waste water, HUMANS waste water (along with many other things) with our irresponsible habits…what an ignorant. Please don’t get me started on the impact we humans make on this planet…God I hate people like you ughhhh…
thanks rmbrruffian that’s helpful. I will check into that.
thanks marianne will do

that muslims are taught not to fear, obey and deify any human being, because they trust God only as their unique master. So a muslim will not be desperate whatever good he loses and will not love any woman to the point of adoring her and being desperate if she leaves him;because he knows that God will NEVER leave him alone,no matter what humans put him through. On the other hand,Islam’s dark side is made of the inhuman, heartless laws prescribing stonings, beheadings and mutilations for so-called crimes, such as illegal sex and apostasy.Music is forbidden, dogs are forbidden and once you convert, you better follow all the rules, because there is only the way in and no way out from Islam. So,the question is:if Islam can be so beautiful, then why muslims can be so judgemental and why cannot they reform some of their habits in more human, modern ones? Please don’t answer that muslim criminal laws are strong deterrents to crime, because I’ve had enough of these excuses.

dog trainer just needing a second opinion?

dog deterrent

I’m a dog trainer and have a Husky puppy going thru one of my classes that over the weeks has become increasingly aggressive. He’s about 3 or 4 months old and his biting originated as just a puppy teething and being a puppy. All good. Easy to work with and around…

but lately he’s become aggressive and antagonistic about it. His owner listens to me in class but I can’t ever get out of him whether he’s using my recommended techniques at home or not. He has a large family and his wife is terrified of the dog and the girls can’t even play with him anymore so he keeps Hachi locked up a lot :-/ which is only making the problem worse.

So far our current plan of action is definitely more exercise, lots more socialization, doing the typical "yelp" and pull away then replacing your hand/foot/ect with one of his toys to show him the "right" way to chew, no rough housing or games that would rile him up to the point of going crazy. Everything else the dad just turns his nose up at.

So my current ideas to suggest are a) a spray bottle to get him with when he bites or b) a "rattler"… a can with rocks or coins in it that is shaken when the dog bites and it scares them so they make a negative connection between the sound and what they did c) "time outs"… when the dog gets riled up and starts getting aggressive either walking away and "hiding" for like half a minute and then coming back or putting the dog up in time out for a bit.
all these additional methods come highly recommended thus far in my searches. (btw chew deterrents are useless on him… he likes the tastes!)

i guess i just wanted maybe some thumbs up or downs on these and some further suggestions if you have any :)

happy training (i hope lol)
PS the sooner i can come up with a new game plan for this pup and family the better :) i have them in class tomorrow morning and won’t see them again for a couple weeks so I’d like to be able to touch base before they head out
the yelping is what their littermates do when a bite hurts. It helps teach them bite inhibition… FYI
the aggression isn’t just in class. It’s the worst at home and i just see the tiptop in the ring. We’ve tried a myriad of toys, squeaky, ball, soft, bouncy, rubber, hard, rope…
He’s only like this with people. He’s actually quite excellent with the other dogs in the class and surrounding area.

dog deterrent

She’s teething at the moment and in the "I can eat anything" mode. She is almost 5 months old and an Irish Wolfhound – so nothing is out of reach. She doesn’t damage anything, She just likes the movement of them in the wind.
It just bothers me because I have to rewash them..
She can’t be tied up anywhere, she has an abundance of toys that she also plays with, and she is not allowed inside (and I do not want abuse for this fact, I know most dogs live inside in America, but not here).
Basically I want suggestions for deterrents. I know most will suggest training but I have tried and this is very difficult as she only does it when we are not around.
Please don’t be rude. I am not an idiot because my dog isn’t allowed inside. I am asking for suggestions on deterrents. Because things are different here than they are there doesn’t make it worse. My dogs are probably better cared for then most inside dogs. I know you won’t believe a word I say, but please do not come on here to insult.

How do I stop cat from urinating on things?

dog deterrent

I’ve asked this question a thousand times, and I still don’t know what to do. It’s getting frustrated.

Basically my cat is almost 4 years old, I’ve had him since he was a 3 month old kitten. He has been neutered since I got him and still has his claws. I also have a dog and we lived with another cat for a while. He’s been urinating on things since I got him. Anything that can be construed as a bed (pet beds, pillows, mats, folded laundry). I have narrowed down reasons and I think he doesn’t like other animals.

I’ve tried deterrents and foil and things. As soon as the foil is off, he comes back to it and pees on it. I’m tired of buying new things and I’m tired of smelling cat pee!

Is this just the way he is? If so, it’s annoying. Any suggestions on how to make him stop? I can’t just get rid of everything soft, I don’t want to get rid of him, and I don’t want to get rid of the dog.

Save my house from my cats?!?

dog deterrent

Suzie was born inside our house and has never in her life used the litter box. We tried to train her, regardless of all our tactics and the tips we received from vets and advice websites, nothing ever worked. She’s 4 years old, has went to the vet and got a clear bill of health, she’s been spayed, but she constantly urinates and poops all over the living room. She likes to go outside, and we let her, but she will NOT do her business outside. She’ll scratch at the door to come in and once she does, she soils the living room carpet and then wants to go back outside to play some more. We tried leaving her outside, but she’ll hold it in until she’s sick if we don’t just let her in and clean up after she’s done.

The horrible thing of the matter is that most of our other cats are following in her pawprints and the house is becoming nearly uninhabitable. The difference is that the other cats aren’t inhibited by which room they go in though. From bedrooms, to dirty laundry, kitchen counters, appliances, the dining room table. They’ll urinate EVERYWHERE, but they WILL poop in the litter box, which is one up on Suzie.

We love our cats and the majority are already fixed and those that aren’t are going to be very soon. We keep the litter boxes clean and it’s strange how they’ll poop in the litter box but urinate everywhere else.

So I need two pieces of advice.
1- What can I do to stop them from soiling the carpets, counters, and pretty much everywhere. They’re not normal, they LIKE the smell of oranges and lemons, even vinegar!, so those kinds of deterrents don’t work O_O…

2- What can I do to get rid of the smell. I know apple cider vinegar is great for clothes, sheets, and such, but the carpet is so rancid and we really can’t afford nor do we have the man power to pull it up or change it. I’m DESPERATE on getting rid of the smell and odors. It’s stifling!

About us:
We live in the country with numerous indoor cats. My dad is a stroke patient and we recently lost our beloved dog Jack. We’re all attached to these cats and can’t bare to throw them away. Yes money is tight at the moment, but we’re getting by and you can’t replace love. There are dangerous animals that lurk in the woods around our house at night, so we don’t allow any of them to stay outside unless it’s during the day and we’re home, in which case they always stay around the back patio anyway. I really don’t know what to do anymore to get them trained and stop making our house to unpleasant. Most people who used to visit has even stopped coming because of the smell that just won’t go away.
I completely appreciate any and all advice that can help make our house a home again and put our felines back to being behaved pets.

Help Baby bird wont leave my doorstep!!!!?

dog deterrent

Ok, Sunday morning I wake up and there is this baby bird. Now I’m not 100% sure what kind of bird he is all I know is that he’s mostly black but the wings are starting to turn a dark blue. Anyway we live on the 3rd floor of an apartment bldg when I went to open the door it was just standing there looking at me, I started to walk towards it so that we could leave and he took off and went about 3 ft down the steps. I saw a bigger bird that was resting on the ledge near it so my first thought was "this is just a baby bird learning to fly." That was until we came back that evening and he was still there! So finally I decided to just let it go and no stress about it. So he finally left on Sunday night and stayed gone until yesterday (wed) when I got home from work he was once again just standing at the door!!!!! After being inside for a few hours he began to flop his wings up against the door making scratching sounds like a dog or cat wanting to be let back into the house. This morning when i leave for work sure enough he is sitting right there. I wouldn’t care as much if he wasn’t right in front of my door I don’t want someone to forget he is right there and fling the door open and have him fly inside my house! I have searched online and the only thing I can find is putting up spikes or big sound deterrents that I can’t use because this is not my own property. Any information anyone can give me on how to get rid of it or what this means would really help! Thanks! Only serious answers please this is really getting annoying and I want help!

dog deterrent

I have 2 dogs (Henry 1 year old dachshund and Huck a 6 month old Aussie) and we just adopted a kitten about a month ago. I try to keep the litter box away from them by closing the baby gate in the hall so the cat can still get to it. But the first thing the dogs do if they get into my room is go get a litter covered piece of poop. I sternly tell them no and on numerous times as gross as it is have wrestled the piece of poop out of their mouths and put back in the litter box showing them and telling them no. We are about to move and when we do I think I am going to get one of the boxes that open from the top. But both my pups are too smart for their own good and would probably find a way to still get to it… Is there any training techniques or deterrents that would make them stop… I am so tired of watching them smack on a piece of poop especially since it makes me want to vomit…
