New rescue housebreaking issue.

dog deterrent

I brought home a 5 month old American Staffordshire Terrier mix from the shelter Saturday (4-5 days ago) and he’s getting better at housebreaking but will pee inside if he doesn’t go out the second he needs to. He goes in one spot it seems, right by the gate that blocks off the bedroom where the cats are hiding out. What’s the best way to curtail this issue? I’ve thought about moving his bed there since I know dogs don’t’ like peeing where they sleep, would that work? How about a deterrent like bitter apple? Help please! I’m running out of carpet cleaner!
When I catch him I yell NO! and take him out immediately, he stops and then continues outside where he gets ons of praise and treats for doing his business outside. I use vinegar and water after cleaning solution to help diffuse the smells as well, maybe that’s not helping?
Also, we live in an apartment (a large one but still, an apartment) and thus I cannot install a doggy door.

Another question of concern..?

dog deterrent

So my dogs, incredible outside of the house, impeccably behaved/well trained and just as great at the house.. But when strangers come to our backyard, for example people from the city, such as the meter man, or people to climb and check the telephone poles come, they are incredibly territorial, and display almost aggressive behavior..I have on many occasions stayed back to observe their behavior, and see how they behave when I’m not there, and they just go nuts!

I mean especially from our youngest dog Stone, he displays the most standoffish attitude towards those strangers, with hackles raised which is clearly stemming from an unsure, insecurity of his..

Do I correct this when such people come around? Obviously my dogs don’t understand who these people are, but we humans know who they are. I’m not sure whether I allow them to display this behavior for deterrents of the home when we aren’t around, or correct them. Because I know once I correct my dogs they WILL listen.

What are your thoughts on this, and do any of your dogs act the same way?

Best family watch/guard dog for me?

dog deterrent

I’m looking for information on a guard/watch dog that my family could get along with. I’ve raised two puppies, a jindo and shiba to adult hood.

Now I’m looking for a less personable dog, and one that would bond with the whole family and not just me. Also, I want a deterrent for robbers breaking in since both of my dogs are too cute and fuzzy looking. Plus they don’t have protective instincts.

My mother doesn’t want a dog that sheds, but is loyal to her and the family. Before that I was thinking of getting a GSD, but now I might be looking into a Doberman. We have no kids in the family – just a cat and two dogs.

dog deterrent

I have checked some of the pet store websites and haven’t found anything. The deterrent could be scent, or electricity, or just an unpleasant feel. We have some outside dogs that get a little insistent when they want to come inside. We don’t want to hurt them–just keep them from damaging the door.

I would appreciate any websites or other sources that I might be able to check out.
<I>, I didn’t give you a violation notice. I gave you a best answer.

About the ASPCA, we live in Pleasanton, Texas. I’m not going to give a street address for obvious reasons. We don’t want to hurt our animals, just keep them from damaging our brand new and very expensive back door. I doubt if the ASPCA would find our actions objectionable–they might even have some good ideas.
<I>, I have also noted that my question and your best answer have been removed. Apparently someone didn’t like any of it. I will, of course, appeal the removal of the question. I can’t guarantee any results by Yahoo, but the removal was not the result of any direct action I took, and I think it is a good and legitimate question.

I chose your answer as best answer because it seemed to illustrate my point. You were abusive, abrasive and resorted to name-calling. This was the behavior I find objectionable.

Perhaps my answer to you may have provoked the removal of my question. I will let Yahoo decide.

Mothball scent poisonous to dogs?

dog deterrent

I have a problem with stray cats coming into my yard and knocking over all of my ceramic planters and killing my flowers. I have to make them go away. I read that mothballs are a good deterrent for cats but it may be lethal to them just from inhaling the smell? Or eating it-I’m not sure. To tell you the truth, I really don’t care. I know that sounds mean but I was bitten by one and it ended up costing me 0 and that’s with health insurance. So between biting me and killing my plants and pooping in my yard..I want them gone!
I can either try moth balls or a sprinkler motion sensor that sprays them when they come in the yard but that’s going to cost me another 0.
Mothballs only cost .
My question is, I have 2 dogs, will the mothball scent harm my dogs? I don’t want my dogs getting sick.
And I know you’re going to lecture me about being mean to cats but I’ve tried to be nice to them but they’re costing me tons of money I just can’t afford. I just want them to go away. If you have another solution that isn’t expensive than please let me know. Thank you.
Okay, I was afraid of that. I really didn’t want to harm the cats anyway. There’s got to be another solution.
They are stray cats and I’ve tried adopting one and being nice but it bit me and end up costing me close to a thousand dollars so I’m finished with being nice to them.

dog deterrent

He is incontinent of urine and he is ruining my wood floor in the dining room where he has chosen to urinate and defecate. I’ve put a litter box there on top of layers of paper and trash bags. The volume of urine has increased over the last week and I don’t know if its all the cat or if the dog – who is explicitly trained to go out and always has been – is adding to what the cat is doing. The floor boards are starting to warp not to mention the carpet being ruined and the odor and on and on.

The cat is being treated by a vet and I hope you all will help me out if you can without getting into what the vet is doing. Suffice it to say he’s being well cared for but he is very ill.

Do any of you have any suggestions about a deterrent to the cat urinating all over as well as in his box. I will keep the dog in a room tonight and see what happens there. Any suggestions will be very gratefully received. Our cat is 12 and his brother and litter mate died in September 2010 of the same issues that this one remaining cat has. Thanks in advance.
We had to put his brother to sleep because his illness was so advanced that he was desperately ill and keeping him for our sakes would have been cruel. The remaining cat did not show any symptoms until after his brother died. The answer to your question is yes I have considered it. Should I keep him alive and have him ruin part of our house more than he already has? The vet is aware of all this and since we had such trauma with losing the other cat he would like to avoid that for us if possible as long as this one is not in pain. The other thing I tell myself is that since there is already such a large amount of damage I will do the best I can to protect and clean the area and keep him with us unless or until he must be put to sleep. Thanks for answering. I don’t know what to do frankly.

Have you used this ultrasonic anti dog bark unit?

dog deterrent

Has anyone used this item in particular?

http://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-Outdoor-Ultrasonic-Bark-Deterrent/dp/B000UZNLGA

There are several dogs in the neighborhood that get out there and have bark-athons. And their barking excites my dogs so then they bark! I really just want to prevent my dogs from being a nuisance. I’ve tried the Bark-Off (the one that they show on tv) but it didn’t work at all!

Thanks!!

Dogs eating poop, yeah I know, here we go again.
Well the end of last year I bought 2 new Flat Coat girls from another reputable breeder on the East coast as show, performance and breeding prospects.
Yes I already know that young dogs will eat poop and eventually grow out of it, but one of the girls is over a year old and the other is close to a year and it still continues unless I`m out there with them to pick it up right away or chase them away from it.
But now they have even gotten to the point where as they will try to get at it from one of the other dogs I have before it even hits the ground, getting their snouts and heads covered in it as well, YUK!!!!!
By the way I feed an all natural diet to them which is mainly meat, either fowl, fish or Bison in kibble form.
I have tried additives, even one from my vets office.
I have had them on pineapple mixed in their food but nothing so far has worked.
Other than additives has anyone found a natural deterrent I can mix with all the dogs food that works as I would really like to end this nonsense?
Please only reasonable answers will be appreciated.
God Bless
Thats`s alright Julie, I`m 54 with no answer to this either, lol.
Ohmy taking them out seperately won`t work when you own a kennel, waaaay Too time consuming when their is so much else to do.
I would also like to add that I feed a top shelf brand of food so I believe a vitamin defficency is out as well.
As well the 2 I`m refering to are not fast eaters, they lay down to eat.
Julie
It is a thought I must admit but one I can not do with this breed with Flat Coats being very soft dogs.
I have used them in the past for training retrieving work but I keep the setting on vibrate and not shock.
The other thing about shock collars is that the dogs do develop collar recognition and still will try to get away with it when not wearing one.
As my guys are all show dogs I can not leave a collar on them all the time as it will break hair as well.
Thanks Iggy
I`ll have to give that a try, sounds like an interesting solution
Julie did you catch that one?
wishinuwelltoo
I was actually going to bring them in to have their hips checked anyways (OFA`d) even though they are still too young I would like to know how they are doing, then do it again at 2 yeqrs of age.
My younest still looks like a spider all leg and still growing into her body, lol.
But both girls have been laying down to eat as long as I have had them, but both have really nice movement .
I guess time will tell but thanks
Saved from TN
They already know the Leave it command but unless I`m watching over them the entire time to enforce it, it just is not going to work

Outdoor, collarless deterrents?

dog deterrent

I have a small area between a gate and a closet that leads to the back door.
My dog hurt her paw and calmed down for a few days, long enough to make me think she was going to stop the destructive, door-clawing behavior.
Needless to say, it was a big facade and she has taken up eating my backdoor again after just minutes of being outside. I don’t want to hear any "dogs should be indoor only" BS because not all dogs WANT to be inside, she just wants to be inside at certain times, which aren’t easy to predict. Instead of asking to come in like she used to, she now eats my door and I’m not going to force an indoor/outdoor dog to stay in when she wants out, or vice versa.

Are there any outdoor safe deterrents that I can use in this area to keep her from the door? Like the indoor deterrents that blow puffs of air or emit an ultrasonic sound to keep them from entering an undesirable area.
Problem not solved, genius. Try again.
