dog deterrent

We have a problem with barn rats and have taken all the natural measures to resolve it — food in containers, cats, dogs, removing hiding places, snap traps, live traps, etc. I will not use bait so please don’t suggest it — too dangerous for the domestic animals. My mini horse’s hooves are now the target of the evil barn rats. In a matter of days they managed to tear off hoof wall growth and nibble the frog down to the quick. (They are not going after the coronary band….this is the bottom of the hooves so it’s being done when he lays down.) I have used iodine and wraps and now they’ve gone through that. My shoer has never seen this level of rat activity and only my mini horse is affected. Has anyone found a natural product that can be used to coat the hooves as a deterrent? I am going to try hot sauce tonight but if anyone has encountered this and has a solution, PLEASE help. After a week of iodine and wraps he at least wasn’t sore, but that will change overnight at this rate.

How can I get rid of rats in my attic?

ultrasonic dog

I don’t want to use poison because of my dogs.
The rats totally ignore traps. I was wondering if those ultrasonic devices work.
Help! There has to be a way, besides praying for the Pied Piper to appear at my door.
Help!, again.
I’ve had a some success with glue traps, and I agree they are one of the best inventions ever… LOL
But more and more rats are born, and yes,
they are taking over the house, like a horror movie.
I am very grateful for your answers.

Do Ultrasonic Pest Repellers Work ?

ultrasonic dog repeller

Bell & Howell have some out that claim to repel ants, roaches, rats, mice, by just plugging them into an electrical outlet, also Good Life and Black & Decker puts them out. They ‘say’ not to use them if you have hamsters, gerbils, etc, but that they are safe for dogs & cats. I wish they’d make something like this for fleas, However, they are not all that inexpensive but if they work, they’d be worth their weight in gold, not to have an exterminator come every month for at least . We live in South Florida so here, it is a necessity to have pest control, and Florida is just one big ant hill as it is. If you have used these, please tell me.

If convicted rapists and child molesters aren’t going to be executed and are simply going to rot in prison for the rest of their lives, being a drain on the system, shouldn’t they at least be put to good use, in a setting where their (well deserved) pain and suffering will, in the long-run, help humanity?

As a veterinary technology student currently taking Research Methods, I know the suffering that poor little mice, rats, hamsters, dogs, cats, and primates go through, and I want to cry every time I restrain a terrified, squeaking little mouse to give it an injection. But the reality is that lab animals are needed, otherwise most, if not all, of the life-saving medicines that we have today would not be here.

So, why not put our convicted criminals to work? If we’re not simply going to kill the monsters and bury their unembalmed bodies in a mass grave so that they decompose and are no longer a burden on the economy or the earth, we could at least put them to good use. It would relieve the suffering of innocent lab animals while at the same time testing out new drugs, performing tumor studies, etc on creatures that are as identical as possible to human beings — humans themselves.

It could also potentially act as another deterrent: if you want to molest kids, then you’re going to spend the rest of your life strapped to a table with a tumor growing in your abdomen, or your lung, or your face.

Do ultrasonic pest control devices really work?

The advertising says, "Designed to repel: ants, mice, rats, cockroaches, squirrels, bats, fleas, crickets, spiders, bees, waterbugs, and flies." Oddly enough, this device doesn’t bother cats and dogs. Do these things really work? Do you have experience with them? Thanks!

I think we have house mice… Or rats. Help?

dog deterrent

I just found out we have some house mice… At least, I think they are mice. They’re not very big. Maybe an inch and a half long..

We saw one in the basement of our house and now there’s one behind our microwave on the main kitchen counter.

So here’s some of my paranoid questions because we’ve never had a mouse problem before in the seven years we’ve been living in our house:

- Can mice/rats somehow climb up wooden stairs?

- I’m afraid that the mice/rats may get into my clothes. Would they go into my clothes and if they do, what’s a great deterrent? I’ve heard Irish Spring soap works good.

- Should I be afraid of these mice because of diseases they possibly carry? Or do they have fleas that I should be afraid of?

- What’s the best way to get rid of these mice without getting a cat or using poison because we have a small dog in the house? Should we call an exterminator?

- And lastly, do these sound like mice or rats? The one I saw behind the microwave was slightly gray in color and was maybe one to two inches long.

I received some advice last week on how to best deal with 2cats (now 3) that reign in my neighbourhood and are killing other animals which are just disappearing from my garden and affecting the wildlife….

Since my question, my neighbour has decided to bring another cat! and the morning rounds, apart from noisy, are too distressing to watch, so had to stop feeding the birdies until I try the deterrent ways you all suggested but… would Chili powder / dried orange / electronic cat repellers prevent squies, foxes or birds from coming also? I would not like to harm them not stop them from coming…I do not like to buy pets or restricting their freedom in any way but I love having them coming and going in my garden… Appreciate your advice!

I was also too late to chose the Best Answer, and cannot find a way of letting those who participated then know the comments I leave below (just in case, any of them find my question again! :)
I was lucky you all were there at the time. Many thanks for all your wonderful advice and jokes. I was dumbfounded by Thomas synchronistic events that morning and relished reading about the experience + do understand the need to tackle rats and the like but why not releasing the cats during the night, when these other creatures operate? +Dogs used to bring caws to the butchers hundreds or thousands of years ago but evolved by human contact, as cats could and are doing, why not use rat traps or venom instead? What makes some cats follow their killing instinct while other cats do not bother? +A tip for dog lovers: a program called the Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan – SKY3(Freeview11) around 6-7pm. He says he trains humans and rehabilitates dogs and gives fascinating insights into how owner’s energy affects (balances or distorts) animal behaviour. Thanks again >

Best ratters – dogs or cats?

dog deterrent

I’m asking in here so i may get biased answers but i am asking to put the dog love aside for this question and for people who have owned both dogs and cats to consider answering with their experience. I don’t know how active the cat and other-pets sections are so i’m asking here…

I was watching a documentary about mice earlier [i didn't know they were so interesting... ] and i was wondering if you had mice or rats in the area, would you get a dog or cat to act as a natural deterrent and predator for them?

My family had a collie when i was young that used to catch a few mice during the night.. traditionally not a dog known for it, but he was good at it until he was shot by a farmer…

Anyways, for anyone who knows, which would be better for ratting and catching mice and why?

[I don't have a need for either, i'm just curious]

Do the ultrasonic pest control devices work?

These devices supposedly drive away pests (ants, spiders, mice, rats) with an ultrasonic noise that humans cannot hear. Also, will it bother a dog?
