How to stop a destructive dog?

dog deterrent

We adopted a dog from the local shelter 3 months ago, and she’s great, except for one thing. She destroys EVERYTHING. We’ve had dogs our entire lives and we’ve never had one like this so we don’t know what to do. We got chew deterrent spray but it’s not doing anything. She has plenty of toys, including an interactive kong toy filled with treats, but she STILL destroys everything. Our tables and chairs are ruined, as well as three dog beds (hers and the two that belong to our other two dogs). One of my parents is, understandably, getting really really frustrated, while the other one just tries to hide it and pretend it’s not happening (not very responsible behaviour for a parent if you ask me). It remains though, that our house, and by extension, our family is getting destroyed by this dog’s destructive behaviour. She gets lots of attention and exercise too (though she could stand to get walked more often. I can’t do it as i’ve injured my ankle but my parent’s take her.)

What do we do? We’ve tried distractions and deterrents, but she waits until no one is in the room to destroy, so we have no chance of catching her and telling her off…My Dad wants to banish her to the garage forever because she isn’t improving (just getting worse), but even i know that that’s not the answer, she’ll just fester in her bad habits and it will get worse, but i also know that this is completely unacceptable behaviour that we can’t seem to fix, and his idea is starting to look like the only option. Given that we’ve tried everything we can think of, what else is there? I’ve suggested crating her when we can’t watch her, but my Mom (who is trying to hide all the destruction and lets it happen rather than addressing it) is completely against i, as she thinks it’s cruel. I think that while it won’t train her to stop destroying, it will at least prevent her from doing it, but she won’t hear of it.

What else can we do to stop this destructive behaviour, especially as she only does it when we’re not in the same room to watch her (ie: when we’re sleeping). We’ve tried everything we can think of, and it’s driving at least two of us crazy.

She’s teething at the moment and in the "I can eat anything" mode. She is almost 5 months old and an Irish Wolfhound – so nothing is out of reach. She doesn’t damage anything, She just likes the movement of them in the wind.
It just bothers me because I have to rewash them..
She can’t be tied up anywhere, she has an abundance of toys that she also plays with, and she is not allowed inside (and I do not want abuse for this fact, I know most dogs live inside in America, but not here).
Basically I want suggestions for deterrents. I know most will suggest training but I have tried and this is very difficult as she only does it when we are not around.
Please don’t be rude. I am not an idiot because my dog isn’t allowed inside. I am asking for suggestions on deterrents. Because things are different here than they are there doesn’t make it worse. My dogs are probably better cared for then most inside dogs. I know you won’t believe a word I say, but please do not come on here to insult.

When is my lab going to stop chewing???

dog deterrent

I have a lab who is about a year and a half and since my husband and I live in a townhouse (the dog was my dad’s but he moved and had to give her to us), we have to keep her on a leash in the garage becasue she can’t be trusted to not chew on everything in the house. Well, we have gone thru at least 4 leashes, 2 harnesses, 2 beds, and she constantly chews on anything in her reach, including our friends four-wheeler. I know it’s because she’s bored, but there’s nothing we can do right now. We have tried spraying a Bitter Apple chewing deterrent on things, but it only helps for a little while. Any suggestions?? This is becoming very expensive!!!!
We can’t bear to give her away, and we try to exercise her as much as possible. She just has SO MUCH energy!!
One more thing. If there any any other Lab owners out there, could you please recommend some good chew toys for Molly? She goes thru them pretty quick, and most of the ones we see in the store, she would have in shreds in a matter of minutes, or hours. We need lots of sturdy, toys for her. We’re trying to stay away from rawhide so much cuz lately it’s making her sick.

neighbors barking dog

2 dogs, people stay home all day but when they go out there is constant barking, other neighbors complained to police and now dog owner is making their life a living hell (screaming at boy, hiding their toys, dog poops on their lawn etc). I am pregnant and need my sleep and calm time…i dont need to be thinking about murdering dogs! PLEASE HELP!

We have a 1 year old Great Pyrenees that we rescued a few months ago….we think she may have been abused in the past, but we give her lots of love and attention. Problem is she has destroyed almost all my landscape, including eating Phoenix Robelini’s that are quite prickly. We know about separation, given her chew toys, but she just seems more interested in everything she’s not supposed to chew, including my submerged fountain lights….

I’ve read that vinegar works, I’ve buried poop in every hole, and also heard cayenne pepper works too, though I would rather try vinegar first. Any other natural deterrents would be helpful and can I put the vinegar around the plants or on them as well.

HELP!!!!

Help! Can't stop my dog from eating his beds!?

dog deterrent

I have a 2 yo lab mix who is crate trained. He is very obedient in most things, but he tears into and eats every bed we buy him (we correct him when we catch him in the act, but he usually does this in the middle of the night). We have tried just not letting him have a bed, but the sound of his toenails scraping against the plastic bottom of the crate keeps us awake all night. We have tried leaving his favorite chew toys or stuffed Kongs in the crate. We have tried every spray deterrent on the market. Nothing works! He had to be crate trained because he does not sleep through the night and will come scratching at our door otherwise. Between the cost and the mess he makes, this is getting ridiculous!

Counter-surfing dog – what to do?

dog deterrent

Doesn’t matter if there’s anything interesting on the kitchen counters, she’ll check it out anyways! She’ll pull down anything that’s up there, food or not. I know there are motion sensor things, but I’d have to buy so many, and I have a center island, so I’d have to buy 4 just for that! What can I do? I’m thinking some substance that would really turn her off if it got on her paws, but won’t harm her? I need something so offensive that she won’t want to go counter-surfing ever again! (I don’t want to keep this up for forever, I want to use it as a training tool.)

BTW, she never does this when I am home, so I can’t catch her in the act. I leave dry food in her food bowl while we’re gone. She doesn’t like bones, chew toys, Kongs, etc. and toys don’t entertain her. So I’m not looking for a "boredom" solution, I’m looking for a "curiosity" deterrent.
My kitchen is wide open, so I’d have to buy a lot of scat mats and take time every day to set them up and then remove them. And she’s smart. She will know when they are there, she will behave; when they are not, she is free to surf. I need a permanent training solution, not something I need to set up every day.
I do have a crate for her, I just don’t like to keep her locked up in it for extended periods (like more than a couple of hours). I’d rather just train her to behave! But how to train a dog when you’re not home to counter the behavior?!

Dog is chewing up my living room!?

dog deterrent

Hi, I have a dog that is a little over a year old, she has plenty of toys that I rotate around that she seems to love. But recently as soon as I leave the room, for no kidding 5 mins she goes to town on my wooden chairs. I have tried bitter apple spray and she doesn’t seem to mind it.

She has also gotten nippy lately as well and growls, seemingly unprovoked.
She is spayed, has all her shots. She is an Australian Shepard mix.

Any advice? My vet doesn’t seem to think anything is wrong with her, so is there anything else that I can try to do to help her out? Or any other non-harmful deterrents I can use on my wooden furniture?

Any helpful advice wold be amazing, especially from pet parents who have gone though this as well.
She is also walked very frequently (once and hour) and I give her almost constant attention (I’m unemployed and have been since we got her 8 months ago)

dog deterrent

I adopted a pit bull terrier a few moths ago and he is now 8 months old. He is very destructive. He has torn up and chewed to pieces any yard equipment or item he can get to. He’s bit up pieces of wall and chewed off an air vent. He has dug up and ripped out the drip system that brings water to half of the plants and he also chews on the sprinkler heads. He gets plenty of exercise, I walk him daily. The yard itself is huge and he has toys. He doesn’t just behave destructively, he also has obedience problems. Jumping up is a big issue: he doesn’t jump as a greeting so ignoring him hasn’t worked, he knows the sit command but ignores it when he jumps, turning my back when he does it just means that I’ll have more scratches there than the front. I’ve tried spray bottles (he loves getting sprayed in the face so he jumps more), noise deterrent with different things and it never works after the initial surprise, I’ve held his paws, I’ve tried knee in the chest (he just grabs my leg). Help!!

dog deterrent

He won’t stop plucking his chest feathers, my poor bird looks like a plucked chicken, all pink chested :( He lets them grow for a little while then proceeds to pluck every last one out. And yes, I have tried just about everything, including extra time and toys, reading up on the subject, soaking him down several times weekly, "steaming" him in the shower stall after my shower (he loves to just sit in the steam), just about everything except getting him the g.f. I cannot afford for him.
